Getting Started with Copilot
Microsoft's Copilot (formerly titled Bing Chat) combines Open AI's ChatGPT technology with its search engine.
Key notable features include:
- Free access to OpenAI's more sophisticated GPT-4 underlying model and DALLE-3, which are fee-based elsewhere.
- Free access to DALL-E, which is fee-based elsewhere (see the next page for more information)
- Access to the live internet/current events.
- Includes links to internet sources in replies - if requested, Copilot will include links and references throughout its' output.
- Allows you to download outputs into Word, PDF, or Text formats.
To begin, go to Bing Chat from a Microsoft Edge or Chrome browser (or visit https://www.bing.com and select the Chat button).
- You can try out Copilot without a log-in, but to access all features requires a Microsoft account, which can be created using any email.
- Use Microsoft Edge for the full Bing features that interact with your open webpages and other generative AI tools like Compose
Below is a view of the Copilot dashboard where you can enter your prompt via text or voice, add a picture, and choose your conversation style (both 'Creative' and 'Precise' conversation styles utilize ChatGPT-4).
Tip: If you use Copilot/Bing Chat in the side-bar of your web browser, you may find the revolving news and ads to be distracting. To turn these off your browser view:
- Click on the settings gear to open your page settings.
- From the 'Layout' drop-down menu, select 'custom'
- From the 'Content' drop-down menu, select 'content off'.
A few things to note:
- If using without logging in, Bing will ask you to agree with the Terms and Use and Privacy Statement before continuing with the conversation.
- Bing Chat Enterprise doesn’t support the chat history feature and doesn’t retain chat prompts or responses.
