Getting Started with Google Gemini
Gemini (previously 'Bard') is a conversational AI chat service from Google. It offers some cross-referencing of language model output with search output but can be used just for text generation without search.
- To begin, go to https://gemini.google.com/
- Here, you can view the privacy statement and sign in using your existing Google account (Gmail), or you can create a new Google account (Gmail address and password) if you wish to keep Gemini searches separate from your regular account.
- If you don’t want conversations reviewed or used to improve machine-learning models, turn off Gemini Apps Activity.
Once logged in, you can begin a new chat with Gemini.
- Like ChatGPT, Gemini saves a log of your previous conversations in the left-hand sidebar.
- You can also view your Gemini activity and extensions and edit your share settings.
- Compared to ChatGPT, Gemini has more customization options for sharing and saving conversations and can connect to Chrome extensions, as well as (if you give it permission) connect to your Gmail, Docs, and Drive.
- After Gemini generates a response, you can further modify the output by clicking on the 'settings' icon and selecting a preset (shorter, longer, simpler, more casual, etc.).
- Click on the Google icon to double-check the response against content found in Google.
- The gif below (from when Gemini was called 'Bard' demonstrates clicking on the 'G' icon below a generated Gemini response to double-check the response against content found in a Google search.
- The results will indicate specific text highlighted in different colors based on whether the results were similar or not similar to content found in Google.
