Study Tips: Reading

A guide for studying efficiently and effectively

Reading in college is complex

Reading at a college level takes a lot more work than expected. It may mean rereading content to understand the meaning of text. It is advised to take several steps to meet your academic goals and achievements. Oftentimes, you are asked to write papers on an author's meaning or to write a review.

Looking over the information multiple times and knowing what you are looking for are important steps in the reading process. Understanding the content you are reading to complete assignments is necessary, especially as classes have various assignments.

These tips can help you become a more efficient reader.

SQ3R Method

Created by Francis P. Robinson, the SQ3R method is a mnemonic device to help you remember steps to be a more effective reader. What do the letters stand for?

S = Survey

Q = Query

3R = Read, Recall, Review

Although, you are not expected to use this method, it may be useful when taking challenging courses. Take a look how to incorporate each step to become a more effective reader.

SURVEY
Surveying the text is the first step in the SQ3R method. Skim through the text to find the main topics of what you are reading. You can look for illustrations, subheadings, or bold words to get an idea of what the text is saying. Reading summaries can help give you an idea of what to expect. This is the foundation of Robinson's method, which helps prepare you for the information you are about to learn.

QUERY
This means to question what you are reading. Ask yourself what you expect to get out of each section you are reading. Remembering why you are reading can help you stay on track. While you are reading, turn headings into questions so that you can quiz yourself later.

READ
The first R is about reading the passage. Keep in mind, you do not want to read passively. As you read each section, try to summarize the points on a separate sheet of paper. The questions you asked yourself in the previous step should be answered in this step. Be sure to take your time when reading - highlight important sections (if you can!), make notes, and take breaks if needed. Reading thoughtfully can help you in discussions with your class as you will be prepared to respond to the professor's topics.

RECALL
The second R in the SQ3R method may take other forms such as Reread or Recite. The idea is that you are quizzing yourself on what you have just read. You can create summaries of passages, create a map of ideas, or say it out loud in your own words. Not only are you concentrating on what you just read, but you are focusing on answering the questions you created earlier. By doing this, you are thinking more deeply about your readings and determining if you have answered your questions.

REVIEW
Once you have looked over your questions and answered them as best you could, you want to review the materials. Think about what you learned and if you could summarize the content to a classmate, friend, or family member. Update any notes that you have made that do not fit the context.
