Millions of people across the country visit their libraries every week. What’s the draw? Everything.
From young families stopping in for play and storytime, to students sketching out their next creative project in a makerspace, to seniors seeking tech help and everyone in between, libraries of all kinds help us connect the dots from one part of our journey to the next. Chart your next literary adventure by browsing the stacks or joining a book club. Let an author color your imagination at an author talk, outline your big business idea at an entrepreneur workshop, or trace your history with your library’s genealogy resources. Make your mark and get involved with your library by volunteering or spreading the word.
Whatever draws you in, the library has something for everyone. Celebrate National Library Week, April 6 - 12, 2025.
NLWD is a day for library staff, users, administrators and Friends groups to recognize the valuable contributions made by all library workers.
This year (2025), it falls on April 8th.
10 Ways to Celebrate National Library Workers Day
1. Libraries, library workers, managers, and patrons, did you know you can Submit a Star to honor a great worker, team, or department?
2. Libraries, library workers, and managers can also use the day as an opportunity to send out an all-user or all-department email in honor of NLWD, thanking staff or colleagues for their excellence.
3. Union locals can participate, too! Try hosting a NLWD celebration for members, or dedicating a member meeting to honor the day.
4. For librarian social groups and organizations, NLWD is a great time to organize a NLWD potluck or meet-up to celebrate and support each other’s expertise and talent.
5. Library workers can take the initiative by decorating staff spaces with organizing a get-together during break time to recognize the hard work that makes your library great.
6. State ALA Chapters, NLWD is a great opportunity for State ALA Chapters to celebrate and highlight the significant contributions of library workers in their state on their websites and in their publications.
7. Public Library Friends and Trustees can sponsor NLWD activities and gifts to thank and highlight library staff for their achievements and dedication.
8. Academic, School, and Special Libraries can circulate messages of thanks and gifts to busy staff.
9. Purchase an official NLWD poster, satchel or t-shirt from the ALA Store!
10 . And a heartfelt “thank you” to staff and colleagues is always free!
From April 6 to April 12, 2025, Moreno Valley College celebrates National Library Week (NLW). During this annual event, we highlight the contributions of libraries, librarians, and library workers. NLW also promotes library use and support. The theme for this year is "Drawn to the Library!"

DO: Visit the library.
Like so much of life, the biggest part of supporting anything or anyone is just showing up. We need you to use the library! That means walking in the door, sure, but it also means availing yourself of our myriad online services. Use all those databases you’ve got access to but have never, ever touched (other than that time in undergrad you accessed JSTOR to write a paper really last minute). Use your online account. Figure out what we have to offer! But walking through the door is a big part of this, too, and I can’t stress that enough. We want you showing up. Your presence is the present.
DON’T: Reshelve books yourself.
Listen, I know you think you’re helping, but it's actually a pain. Maybe they haven’t been checked in yet. Maybe that book was sitting out because someone was still using it. Help by placing books in designated "changed mind" areas"
DO: Attend library events.
One of the biggest ways that libraries tally these support numbers is by seeing how many people show up for events. There are so many things going on, events that library staff have worked on for weeks, sometimes months, to make sure that they’re well attended. So when two people (total) attend those events, it’s a bummer. Bring friends with you. Attend! We can plan and work and set up and be there, but unless people come to the events, our programming gets cancelled. And we want to keep doing these events for you!
DON’T: Eat hot foods in the study rooms.
It stinks up the room and makes it an unpleasant experience for others after you. Not to mention the mess that left over which staff have to clean.
DO: Let your legislators, district leaders, and community know that the library is a valuable and necessary part of your college experience.
Libraries rely on funding to stay afloat. We need that money for materials, to throw events, to pay our staff, to maintain computers and laptops for checkout. If you show up for us, we get to show up for you. Let the community know that your library serves a crucial, important need. Let them know that the neighborhood would be worse off if the library weren’t around. We support you; you support us, too.
