The first book ban that took place in the United States was in 1637 in what we now know as Quincy, Massachusetts. Thomas Morton produced the first book that was banned by the Puritan government. He published a New English Canaan which is a three-volume work of history, natural history, satire, and poetry. It was banned because it was considered a harsh critique of Puritan customs and power structures.
